FACTS PROMPT ENGINEERING CYCLE LESSON PLAN

As a professor and a consultant, I’ve had the opportunity to work with educators who are incorporating generative A.I. into their classroom practice. Whether it’s working with the pre-service teachers at my university or in working with current teachers in the workshops and professional development I lead, I have been inspired by the creative ways teachers are using generative A.I. for student learning. I’m struck by the intentionality and creativity inherent in the process. But I’ve also noticed a surprising trend. Students don’t always know how to craft relevant prompts for the AI chatbots. So in today’s article and podcast, I share a framework for prompt engineering.

FACTS Cycle: Prompt Engineering Lesson

The FACTS Prompt Engineering Cycle is a classroom-friendly framework that walks students through the process of working with AI in thoughtful ways. It stands for Formulate a question, Acquire an AI tool, Create context, Type the prompt, and Scrutinize the result. To make this easy to implement, I’m sharing a free resource that includes a complete lesson plan, a slideshow, a short video, and a student handout you can use to teach the cycle right away. Simply fill out the information below and you’ll get the the resource. You’ll also be subscribed to my weekly newsletter where I share articles, insights, strategies, and resources.
